Paignton Picture House

While studying at South Devon College, I got the opportunity to help document the dilapidated Paignton Picture House ahead of its restoration. The Grade II listed building closed its operations in 1999, with the interior remaining untouched for decades. Its most famous patron, Agatha Christie, would occupy row two, seat two in the upper circle, and the purpose-built cinema had been a staple in the community since its opening in 1914.

I was enamoured by the complex textures, captivating vistas, characterful decor and distinctive atmosphere while exploring the site. There are countless relics scattered throughout, and it was thrilling to see items left exactly as they were at closing. Among them are documents, newspapers and magazines from the era, records of sweet sales and screenings, film equipment and memorabilia.

Over the course of three months, I examined every nook and cranny, working to capture the essence of the Paignton Picture House as it stands before it starts to change and develop once again.  View more here
