I have been rethinking my approach to landscape art and picking apart my process for creating work during the fall semester of 2023 at Parsons.

I began by mapping my studio as an interior landscape, taking photographs to familiarize myself with new surroundings and thinking about the significance of being in New York. I then started collecting objects and materials locally, discovering the 'Serendipity Shop' through Craigslist and getting several blue bottles for free. This got me thinking about the journey these items took before me, the history they carry and their capacity to hold new memories as well. It made me think about a message in a bottle, travelling across seas – What would I want to add? What would I say?

I started thinking of these bottles as a time capsule, as a metaphor for journeys and transitions as someone who was born in Jamaica, moved to the UK at the age of 5 and is now studying in America. I was introduced to 'The Black Atlantic' by Paul Gilroy during the semester, thinking about the fusion of cultures and movement once more. I took this with the colour blue as a symbol of water and journeys across water. Following this, I received a blue plastic bag from Union Square and created scanographs, drawing visual parallels to water once more. Finally, I experimented with cutting and fusing my images as collages, finding that new landscapes began to emerge in my visual language once again.

The final work is an installation of my full process and development for the project, showcasing the stages I would not normally present but are crucial to my practice and thought process. It takes a chronological approach from left to right, framed by 'Drifting' at the entrance, a photograph I took while travelling between islands on a boat in the Caribbean. 'Carry Me' holds key aspects of myself and my practice, highlighting the active journey taking place in changing surroundings.
